The Mahler Measure of Parametrizable Polynomials

چکیده

Our aim is to explain instances in which the value of the logarithmic Mahler measure m(P ) of a polynomial P ∈ Z[x, y] can be written in an unexpectedly neat manner. To this end we examine polynomials defining rational curves, which allows their zero-locus to be parametrized via x = f(t), y = g(t) for f, g ∈ C(t). As an illustration of this phenomenon, we prove the equality πm(y2 + y(x+ 1) + x2 + x+ 1) = 2D(i) − 3 4 D(ω), where ω = e and D(z) is the Bloch-Wigner dilogarithm. As we shall see, formulas of this sort are a consequence of the Galois descent property for Bloch groups. This principle enables one to explain why the arguments of the dilogarithm function depend only on the points where the rational curve defined by P intersects the torus |x| = |y| = 1. In the process we also present a general method for computing the Mahler measure of any parametrizable polynomial.

Polynomials with small Mahler measure

We describe several searches for polynomials with integer coefficients and small Mahler measure. We describe the algorithm used to test Mahler measures. We determine all polynomials with degree at most 24 and Mahler measure less than 1.3, test all reciprocal and antireciprocal polynomials with height 1 and degree at most 40, and check certain sparse polynomials with height 1 and degree as large...

Lower Bounds for the Mahler Measure of Polynomials on Subarcs

We give lower bounds for the Mahler measure of polynomials with constrained coefficients, including Littlewood polynomials, on subarcs of the unit circle of the complex plane. This is then applied to give an essentially sharp lower bound for the Mahler measure of the Fekete polynomials on subarcs.

The Mahler Measure of the Rudin-shapiro Polynomials

Littlewood polynomials are polynomials with each of their coefficients in {−1, 1}. A sequence of Littlewood polynomials that satisfies a remarkable flatness property on the unit circle of the complex plane is given by the Rudin-Shapiro polynomials. It is shown in this paper that the Mahler measure and the maximum modulus of the Rudin-Shapiro polynomials on the unit circle of the complex plane h...

Sieve-type Lower Bounds for the Mahler Measure of Polynomials on Subarcs

We prove sieve-type lower bounds for the Mahler measure of polynomials on subarcs of the unit circle of the complex plane. This is then applied to give an essentially sharp lower bound for the Mahler measure of the Fekete polynomials on subarcs.

Euclidean Mahler Measure and Twisted Links

If the twist numbers of a collection of oriented alternating link diagrams are bounded, then the Alexander polynomials of the corresponding links have bounded euclidean Mahler measure (see Definition 1.2). The converse assertion does not hold. Similarly, if a collection of oriented link diagrams, not necessarily alternating, have bounded twist numbers, then both the Jones polynomials and a para...
